FDA Updates Salmonella Egg Recall to Emergency Class 1

October 7, 2024

The Food and Drug Administration has updated an egg recall linked to Salmonella to Class 1. This is the highest level of recall due to the chance of fatality if the product is consumed.

USA Today reports that the CDC initially released a recall for Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC eggs in early September. The recall was upgraded to Class I on Sept. 30. The FDA classifies a Class I product as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”

In early September, the CDC reported that 65 people had become infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella in nine states. It was reported in May that some customers fell ill after consuming eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC, and the cases appeared to end in August. “Of 63 people with information available, 24 have been hospitalized and no deaths have been reported,” the CDC wrote at the time of the initial recall.

What Do the Recalled Products Consist Of?

The recalled products include all types (conventional cage-free, organic, and non-GMO chicken eggs) and sizes (M, L, XL, Jumbo) of recalled chicken eggs supplied by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC in Bonduel, Wisconsin. The affected products are also marketed as Tony’s Fresh Market.

The FDA informed the company that environmental samples tested positive for Salmonella. Thus, Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC temporarily ceased producing and distributing its products. The company will undergo thorough sanitation of its farms and equipment and testing before being able to return to business as usual.

Per the FDA, Salmonella is “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

The FDA urges consumers who have purchased the recalled eggs not to consume them. Consumers may contact the company at 715-758-6709.
