Garment Steamers Posing a Severe Burn Hazard Under Recall

February 9, 2024

Over 2 million garment steamers have been recalled due to “posing a serious burn hazard to consumers.”

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Safety Commission, Steamfast, Vornado, and Sharper Image-branded handheld garment steamers are being recalled after reports of the product expelling hot water from the nozzle while heating or during use.

Many of the recalled products were sold at Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, or Amazon and cost between $14 and $35 from July 2009 through January 2024. The announcement comes after the commission received 122 reports of hot water spraying or spitting from the nozzle and 23 reports of burn injuries.

The impacted model numbers are Steamfast model numbers SF-425, SF-435, SF-440, SF-445, and SF-447, Vornado model number VS-410, and Sharper Image model number SI-428. These come in various colors: black, white, light pink, hot pink, sage green, orange, and teal blue.

The model number is found on the side of each steamer, and a label is located on its bottom. The model numbers above should help consumers determine if their steamer has been recalled.

This recall comes on the heels of a separate recall of 1.75M Steamfast Travel Irons due to fire, shock, and burn hazards in December 2023. In April 2023, Vornado travel irons sold under the Brookstone umbrella were also recalled.

In those instances, the travel iron power cord can become damaged near the cord bushing, leading to cord overheating and posing fire and burn hazards. In addition, cord damage near the bushing can result in exposed copper wires, posing a shock hazard.

Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled garment steamers and contact Vornado for a full refund or free replacement handheld garment steamer, depending on the model. The phone number to contact the company with any questions regarding the recall is 888-240-2768.
