Georgia Burger King Swarmed by Cops After Sheriff Complains About Messed-Up Order

October 14, 2024

A Burger King in Cobb County, Georgia, was victim to police swarming after its workers messed up a sheriff’s order.

WSB-TV reports that after the staff misunderstood his order, Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens dispatched his deputies to the eatery. With lights flashing and sirens blaring, three deputies were sent to the scene.

“Hey, do me a favor,” Owens tells a deputy while sitting in his truck outside of the Burger King, per recently released body cam footage. “I need to get, all I need is the owner name of whoever owns this damn facility or the manager.”

Owens continued: “I wanted [to get his female passenger] a Whopper, no mayo, cut in half, right? I don’t need no damn money back no more. I just need to find out who owns this place so I can do an official complaint.”

As might be expected, the Burger King employees were rightfully freaked out by the sudden swarm of police, and they locked themselves in the restaurant. “Nobody is in trouble. We just want to get some names,” one deputy tells the assistant manager. “That guy out there, he’s just going to file a complaint for his food.”

Though the incident happened in 2023, the body cam footage was released on Friday, Oct. 11, after Owens submitted his bid for re-election to his post. According to the outlet, his opponent David Cavender posted the video online. Upon its release, Owens immediately owned up to the extreme reaction and apologized for his behavior.

“At no point did I indicate my position, nor did I ask the responders to do anything that they would not, had not, or have not done for anyone else who makes a business dispute call,” Owens said. “Whether as a Command Sergeant Major, or a major in the Cobb Police Department, or as sheriff, I have always worked to build confidence and trust in leadership.”

He concluded, “To our citizens and residents, it is clear that I need to work harder, and I pledge to do so. Anything that takes away from that mission is a distraction, and for that, I am deeply sorry.”

In Brazil, voting is required, unlike in the U.S. Despite this, a record 31 million voters abstained in the most recent national elections, held in 2022. Ad Age reports that Burger King Brazil launched a campaign, created by DAVID São Paulo, to motivate voters to cast their ballots by emphasizing the value of each vote and its role in society.

After the election on Sunday, Oct. 6, anyone who showed proof of voting at the restaurant counter on Monday, Oct. 7, was given a complimentary order of onion rings or French fries.
