GM’s New Cadillac Lyriq-V May Lead EV Luxury Sales in 2025

January 23, 2025

When car buyers think of luxury, General Motors’ Cadillac brand often comes to mind. Now, GM wants to use that reputation and recognition to take the top spot among luxury electric vehicles. It plans to take that crown with its $80,000 Cadillac Lyriq-V EV and all-electric $130,000 Escalade IQ.

“We are going to position Cadillac to be the bestselling luxury EV nameplate in the U.S. for 2025,” said Cadillac Vice President John Roth, per CNBC. “Again, let me repeat that: bestselling luxury EV [brand] in 2025. The sky’s the limit on what we’re going to be able to do in the luxury EV space.”

Among competitors, GM said the Lyriq-V and its other luxury models will go head-to-head against the likes of cars from Audi and Mercedes-Benz. However, the company said the No. 1 EV manufacturer, Tesla, is not included in its list of “luxury” brands.

With a proposed retail price of $79,995, excluding taxes and fees, the Cadillac Lyriq-V will have an estimated 615 horsepower under the hood and drive for 285 miles on a full charge. GM estimates the Lyriq-V will go from 0 to 60 mph in about 3.3 seconds.

An Upward Momentum of EV Sales Will Help GM

Overall, auto sales are expected to have a banner 2025. The groups S&P Global, Edmunds, and Cox Automotive predict new car sales will grow significantly this year.

Even though the final 2024 numbers are not in just yet, EVs are predicted to set a sales record. Cox anticipates EV sales of around 1.3 million units, which would be about 8% of the total auto market.

While GM says Tesla is not in the same category as its luxury Cadillac brand, it will need to find a way to beat the popularity of Tesla’s Model Y. Despite Tesla’s domination of the EV market, the Detroit automaker is slowly clawing its way to the top.

“The top three manufacturers are Tesla, Hyundai Motor Group and General Motors, with GM having the largest increase in market share year over year at 2.7% at the brand level,” Stephanie Valdez Streaty, Cox director of industry insights, said in December 2024, as reported by CNBC.

Before the end of 2025, Cadillac intends to have five EVs on the market, up from the three models currently available. The 2026 Lyriq-V, which GM will start producing early this year, will be the first Cadillac to have the “V-Series” badge and will be sold in the U.S., Canada, and a handful of other countries.
