Government and retailer earnings will show if Americans are still spending

The U.S. government on Wednesday will release October's retail sales numbers. That and quarterly earnings results from Gap, Kohl's, Macy's, Target, TJX and Walmart will help clarify the picture of consumer spending as the Black Friday weekend approaches.
