Grocers are running out of space in Chicagoland

A mad dash for real estate took place after Dominick’s closed in 2014. Since then, most of the prime store space left by the one-time leader in the market has been bought up, leaving little room for supermarket expansion in the city and its surrounding suburbs. Jewel-Osco and Mariano’s, which account for more than 30 percent of the market, plan to open five stores combined in 2017.
