Ice Cream Listeria Recall: What We Know

More than thirteen brands of ice cream have been recalled due to a probable listeria contamination, according to a notice issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday, June 24.

According to the official notice, over a dozen different brands of ice cream items that were sold through retail outlets and home delivery across the country were recalled by Totally Cool, Inc.

The FDA sample indicated possible amounts of Listeria monocytogenes, prompting the Maryland-based company to recall the items and suspend ice cream production and distribution.

According to the company, no reports of illness have been made thus far.

Consumers are urged to check the full list of recalled products to ensure that their items are not on the list. The FDA is urging consumers to take their affected products back to the original point of purchase for a full refund.

What is Listeria?

This is just the latest recall in a long list of recalls that have punctuated 2024. Earlier this week, a nationwide warning to dog owners was issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in response to a recall of dog treats that may have been tainted with metal items.

3,551 packs of Green Tripe dog treats, marketed as “Barkworthies” and “Best Bully Sticks” and made by Virginia-based TDBBS LLC, are subject to a voluntary recall. These doggie goodies were offered from February 2024 to May 2024 in stores and online throughout the United States.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a foodborne bacterial infection known as listeria infection can be extremely dangerous for individuals 65 years of age or older, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems. Eating unpasteurized milk products and inadequately treated deli meats is the main cause of it.

Listeria infections rarely cause illness in healthy individuals, but they can be fatal in newborns, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems. The symptoms of a listeria infection might be lessened with quick antibiotic treatment.

Listeria microorganisms are resistant to freezing and refrigeration, which is why the sweet treats have been affected. Therefore, foods that are more likely to contain listeria germs should be avoided by those who are more susceptible to serious infections.
