Insignia Product Recall Of 930,000 Pressure Cookers Sold at Best Buy

October 27, 2023

FOX Business reported that “the Insignia brand pressure cookers were sold at Best Buy stores in US and Canada,” and were “recalled due to possible burn hazard.”

In a significant consumer safety move, Best Buy recalled a substantial number of their multi-function pressure cookers on Thursday. The recall, caused by a production defect that could result in consumer burns, primarily involves the Insignia brand pressure cookers.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) alerted consumers that the problem originates from incorrect volume markings on the inner pots of the recalled devices. These erroneous markings could lead users to overfill the cookers. Under these circumstances, the liquid inside may spurt out when the pressure cooker is opened after pressurizing or vented using the quick-release method, leading to potential burn injuries.

Approximately 930,000 units in the U.S. have been affected by the recall. The suspect models are six- and eight-quart pressure cookers, with model numbers NS-MC60SS8, NS-MC60SS9, and NS-MC80SS9. The recall also extends to separately sold inner cooker pots bearing model numbers NS-MCRP6NS9 and NS-MCRP6SS9. The recall is not contained to the U.S.; approximately 10,100 units in Canada could also be affected.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission adds “The pressure cooker has incorrect volume markings on the inner pot. This can cause consumers to overfill the pot and hot food and liquids to be ejected when the pressure cooker is vented using the quick release method or opened while its contents are pressurized, posing a burn hazard to consumers.”

The sale of these pressure cookers took place both online and in physical Best Buy locations throughout the country between October 2017 and June 2023. Best Buy operates over 900 stores in the U.S. and another 160 in Canada, along with over 60 outlet centers and other locations, as per their quarterly earnings report.

“Nothing is more important to us than our customers’ safety,” a Best Buy representative told FOX Business. “We’re contacting customers who have purchased one of the impacted products to make sure they’re aware and have clear instructions on getting the right replacement parts. If customers have any questions, they can contact Best Buy at 800-566-7498.”

It is also noted that consumers purchased the pressure cookers online through Amazon during the recall period.

To date, there have been 31 known incidents of these pressure cookers ejecting their contents, which resulted in 17 burn injuries, including some severe second-degree burns, as confirmed by the CPSC.

Best Buy urges customers to stop using the recalled appliances immediately. The company will provide new inner pots and floating locking valves free of charge to customers who contact them. However, Best Buy has clarified on their recall-related web page that returned cookers will not be eligible for store credits, refunds, or replacement kits. Customers should register online instead.
