Krispy Kreme’s ‘Friends’ Doughnuts Stir Controversy

June 22, 2024

Krispy Kreme is inviting fans to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic ’90s sitcom “Friends” with a new line of specialty doughnuts. However, this launch has left some American fans feeling left out, as the themed treats are available exclusively in the U.K.

Earlier this week, Krispy Kreme announced the release of four limited-edition “Friends”-inspired doughnuts. The announcement, laden with references to the beloved show, enthusiastically proclaimed, “COULD WE ‘BE’ ANY MORE EXCITED?!?!” Each doughnut is designed to pay homage to the characters and episodes that made “Friends” a television phenomenon.

The decision to release these doughnuts exclusively in the U.K. has left some American fans feeling neglected. Despite this, Krispy Kreme has not provided an explanation for its choice. While these doughnuts have excited fans in the U.K., American fans have voiced their disappointment on social media. Many have questioned why a tribute to a quintessentially American show isn’t available in its home country. Comments under Instagram posts announcing the doughnuts reflect a mixture of confusion and frustration, with fans asking why the treats are limited to the U.K.

The four doughnuts in the collection each capture a unique aspect of the show. The “We Were on a Coffee Break” doughnut, referencing Ross’ memorable line, features the “Central Perk Coffee” shop logo. The “Friends” doughnut, adorned with the iconic fountain, font, and colored sprinkles, stands out with its tribute to the show’s opening sequence. The “How You Doin’?” doughnut, echoing Joey’s famous catchphrase, includes the purple and yellow door peephole from Monica’s apartment. Lastly, the “Trifle” doughnut nods to Rachel’s disastrous Thanksgiving dessert, filled with strawberry and custard, topped with chocolate curls and green sprinkles.

In contrast, American fans have recently enjoyed the Dolly Parton-themed doughnuts, which concluded over the weekend. As they look forward to the next potential collaboration, some are already suggesting themes, such as a tie-in with the newly released “Inside Out 2” movie.
