Live Nation Continues To Dominate Ticket Sales After ‘Most Active Summer Concert Season Ever’

November 12, 2024

Live Nation shows no sign of slowing its progress toward domination of the concert and event ticket sales space after posting a cheery Nov. 11 earnings report.

Despite being dogged by an ongoing lawsuit launched in May — one initiated by the Department of Justice and 30 attorneys general from both red and blue states, according to Rolling Stone — it appears that Live Nation remains relatively unfazed as 2024 draws to a close.

Live Nation Posts Huge Profits Even as Revenue Dips

This year has been filled with huge concerts, as Live Nation reported a staggering 144 million tickets sold in 2024 through October. Posting a third-quarter revenue of $7.7 billion (though this represents a slight 6% dip, according to Variety), Live Nation drove the point home by underscoring its “highest ever concerts profitability,” exhibiting adjusted operating income of $474 million (up 39%) as well as margins of 7.2% (an improvement of more than 200 basis points).

Live Nation kicked off its earnings report with a glowing statement from president and CEO Michael Rapino:

“We wrapped up our most active summer concert season ever, our show pipeline has never been bigger, and brand sponsorships are accelerating. While operating income will be impacted by one-time accruals, we are pacing toward double-digit AOI growth this year. As we look toward an even bigger 2025, we have a larger lineup of stadium, arena and amphitheater shows for fans to enjoy. Momentum continues to build, as we expand the industry’s infrastructure with music-focused venues to support artists and reach untapped fan demand across the globe.”

Other impressive metrics highlighted by the brand include:

  • Significantly increased Venue Nation fan spending at both festivals and amphitheaters
  • Double-digit increase in sponsorship commitments, with a near-complete booking schedule
  • Uptick in overall ticket sales year-over-year through October, up 3%

In addition to 2024’s achievements, Live Nation also projects an extremely strong 2025. Sponsorships are projected to grow by double digits, the company already moved 20 million tickets via presale, and a “growing concerts pipeline in large venues” indicates strong growth in terms of access to stadiums, arenas, and amphitheaters. And of course, more well-attended concerts — especially of this scope — means more revenue from multiple streams.

Ongoing DOJ-led Case Against Live Nation Remains Unresolved

As Rolling Stone indicated, several questions remain in play as the DOJ-led lawsuit against Live Nation hangs in the balance.

The lawsuit was initiated under the Biden administration over claims that Live Nation was engaging in violation of antitrust laws.

Biden-appointed Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter described a great degree of public outcry over the company’s behavior. “People love music, and a monopolist is getting in the way of their ability to access it and making their lives more expensive,” Kanter told Rolling Stone.

However, now that former president and president-elect Donald Trump has emerged victorious in the recent election, the fate of that antitrust lawsuit may have altered its trajectory. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s what Live Nation president and CFO Joe Berchtold was hopeful for on the company’s Nov. 11 earnings call.

“We are hopeful that we’ll see a return to the more traditional antitrust approach, where the agencies have generally tried to find ways to solve problems they see with targeted remedies that minimize government intervention in the marketplace,” Berchtold said.
