McDonald’s Might Relaunch $5 Meal Deals

May 11, 2024

McDonald’s is gearing up to launch a $5 meal deal in the U.S., aiming to attract cost-conscious consumers back into its stores during these times of inflation. The proposed deal is rumored to include a McChicken or a McDouble, accompanied by fries and a drink.

Franchisees, who operate about 95% of U.S. stores, expressed concern about how the $5 meal initiative affects profitability, especially in states with higher minimum wages. To address these apprehensions, McDonald’s secured financial support from Coca-Cola Co. to alleviate potential losses for franchisees.

While the specifics of Coca-Cola’s contribution remain undisclosed, the collaboration underscores McDonald’s efforts to provide value and affordability to customers during a challenging economic climate.

Chief Executive Officer Chris Kempczinski emphasized the importance of affordability during the company’s first-quarter earnings call, citing consumer weariness toward prices. McDonald’s, which has historically enjoyed strong sales, is now witnessing a decline in patronage, particularly from low-income consumers.

McDonald’s shift toward national value promotions reflects a broader trend in the fast-food industry, with competitors like Burger King and Wendy’s offering similar deals to cater to price-sensitive consumers. The company is adapting its strategy to meet evolving consumer demands, recognizing the growing emphasis on value in purchasing decisions.

When it comes to a restaurant’s menu, there have also been points made about the allure of fast food’s secret menus. In this case, it was discovered that certain McDonald’s restaurants might offer a $12 McDonald’s “Dinner Box” that includes two cheeseburgers, four small fries, 10-piece chicken nuggets, two Big Macs, and sauces. However, social media discussions revealed pricing and content differences across states, showing franchise autonomy. McDonald’s confirmed regional variations in bundled deals, available through the app under the “shareables” tab.

As McDonald’s prepares to roll out its $5 meal deal, the collaboration with Coca-Cola and the focus on affordability signal a strategic response to changing consumer preferences. By offering compelling value propositions, McDonald’s aims to regain its footing and appeal to a wider range of customers amidst shifting market dynamics, especially after the disappearance of fast food value menus.
