McD’s ends discrimination suit with Black franchisee for $33.5 million

December 20, 2021

McDonald’s will pay franchisee Herb Washington $33.5 million to settle a suit he brought against the company last February. Mr. Washington, who owns multiple McDonald’s restaurants in Pennsylvania and Ohio, claimed that the company had steered him to buy franchises in poorer, lower-revenue neighborhoods and denied him the opportunity to own locations in more affluent areas. As part of the settlement, Mr. Washington will give up his 13 franchises. McDonald’s management said in a statement that the amount of the settlement was what the company deemed to be a fair price for the value of the restaurants.
