Memorial Day 2024 Hours for Retail
May 25, 2024
As Memorial Day approaches on Monday, May 27, 2024, it’s important to know which businesses and services will be available during the holiday. Memorial Day, often seen as the unofficial start of summer, brings a mix of closures and openings across various sectors, affecting banks, postal services, government offices, and retail stores.
Restaurants and Fast Food
Restaurant and fast food hours vary by location, so double-check with your local restaurant:
- Applebee’s: Most locations open.
- Buffalo Wild Wings: Open.
- Chick-fil-A: Open, some with limited hours.

Banks and Financial Services
As a federal holiday, Memorial Day will see most bank branches closed. The Federal Reserve system observes the holiday, meaning that traditional banking services will be unavailable. However, online banking and ATMs will remain operational, allowing customers to conduct essential transactions. The stock market will also be closed in observance of the holiday.
Postal Services and Shipping
The United States Postal Service (USPS) will not operate on Memorial Day, with no mail delivery and all post office locations closed. UPS will similarly suspend pickups and deliveries, with many UPS Store locations also shutting their doors for the day. FedEx will offer limited services, with only FedEx Custom Critical delivery available and FedEx Office stores operating on modified hours.
Government Agencies and Schools
Nonessential government offices, including the DMV, libraries, courthouses, and city halls, will be closed on Memorial Day. This closure extends to both federal and state courts. Most public school districts will also observe the holiday, giving students and staff a day off.
Retail and Grocery Stores
Retail and grocery stores generally remain open on Memorial Day, often featuring special holiday sales. Major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Kmart will be open, allowing shoppers to take advantage of discounts. However, Costco will be a notable exception, as it will be closed on May 27.
Grocery stores such as Kroger, Aldi, H-E-B, Trader Joe’s, Publix, and Whole Foods will also open their doors, but it’s wise to check the specific hours of your local store as they may vary.
Even with many of these places open for business, remember that Memorial Day serves as a moment to honor military personnel who have died in service to the country.
