This year, National Burrito Day falls on Apr. 3. As with every other yearly foodie celebration, customers can get all sorts of promotions, deals, and freebies from participating retailers. Here’s a list of what we have so far.

National Burrito Day Deals From El Pollo Loco, QDOBA, & More

QDOBA is honoring “National Burrito Day” with a fantastic hunger-busting BOGO offer. For one day only, QDOBA rewards members can get a free entrée by purchasing any entrée and a drink.

QDOBA’s BOGO Burritos are only available on Apr. 3. QDOBA Rewards members can redeem their free burrito with any entrée and drink purchase at participating QDOBA locations. The BOGO promotion is not valid for quesadillas. The promotion is only applicable for orders placed and completed on Apr. 3 and is restricted to one per customer.

Meanwhile, per a press release announcement, El Pollo Loco, the nation’s leading fire-grilled chicken restaurant, is expanding National Burrito Day to a three-day celebration with the return of its Burrito Block Party! Loco Rewards members can enjoy incredible burrito prices and spectacular incentives from Apr. 2 to Apr. 4, since one day isn’t enough.

Finally, according to CT Insider, local favorite Bubbakoo’s Burritos is offering a $5 reward for loyalty rewards members who buy an entrée on National Burrito Day. The $5 coupon reward will then be valid from Apr. 4-10. The national chain Moe’s Southwest Grill is also offering buy-one-get-one-free deals on burritos and bowls. Customers who order online must have a Moe rewards account. The chain has 18 Connecticut locations.

While Taco Bell hasn’t offered any deals for the holiday, they did do so last year through the proprietary app, and there’s a good chance they will do so again this year.

All About The ‘Holiday’

According to National Today, National Burrito Day is celebrated on the first Thursday in April of every year.

The Mexican dish is beloved worldwide but has only been available in American restaurants since the 1930s. The Mexican cuisine is a national favorite, and most prefer their burritos with beans or meat, salsa, cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and veggies. There’s also a disagreement over whether rice belongs in a burrito.

The first historical reference to a burrito is in the “Dictionary of Mexicanisms,” published in 1895. The word “little donkey” in Spanish (“burro” means “donkey”) may allude to the packs and bedrolls that donkeys used to carry, which give the beloved treat its name. At the time, a burrito was defined as a “rolled tortilla, with meat or other food within.” The meal first gained popularity in Guanajuato and Guerrero before spreading north to the United States.

Modern burritos (tortillas stuffed with beans and hot sauce) developed around Fresno and Stockton, California, and first appeared on restaurant menus in the 1930s at the El Cholo Spanish Café in Los Angeles. The popular dish’s recipes were first published in 1934 in Erna Fergusson’s “Mexican Cookbook.”

American burritos have numerous components, whereas Mexican burritos only have meat and beans (and no rice!). The first frozen burritos were sold in 1964. Fried burritos are now affectionately referred to as chimichangas. Tia Sophia’s of Santa Fe, New Mexico, presented breakfast burritos in 1975. Breakfast consists of a tortilla loaded with bacon, potatoes, chili, and cheese. In 2014, Taco Bell released their popular breakfast burrito.

Burritos are appreciated by almost everyone, making them one of the most popular Mexican foods worldwide. National Burrito Day is an excellent opportunity to satisfy your cravings for your favorite Mexican flavors.
