Nestlé Recalls 440,500 Starbucks-Branded Holiday Mugs Due to Potential Hazards

March 22, 2024

Nestlé USA is recalling around 440,500 Starbucks-branded holiday mugs in the U.S. due to safety hazards, which left at least a dozen people with injuries such as burns or cuts while using the product.

The mugs have the potential to overhear or break when put in the microwave or filled with hot liquid, leaving the user at risk.

On Thursday, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said there have been 12 situations where the mugs overheated or broke, leading to 10 injuries in the U.S. Among the reported injuries are nine instances of severe burns and blisters on fingers or hands, as well as one case of a cut on a finger. One of these injuries led to the need for medical attention.

The mugs were sold online and in retailers such as Walmart, Target, and military retail outlets but were not sold at Starbucks cafes. These mugs were a part of four different gift sets that were available for purchase in these stores from November 2023 through January 2024, and they were priced at different points, such as $10, $13, and $20.

The gift sets were available in two different size options — 11 ounces and 16 ounces — and consisted of a metallic-coated ceramic mug with the Starbucks branding on them. Among the affected 2023 holiday gift sets were the Starbucks Holiday Gift Set with 2 Mugs, Starbucks Classic Hot Cocoa and Mug, Starbucks Peppermint and Classic Hot Cocoas and Mug, and Starbucks Holiday Blend Coffee and Mug.

CPSC alerted customers to immediately stop using the mugs. Customers have the option to return the mugs to the point of purchase or contact Nestlé USA for a complete refund.

The CPSC said that on the Nestlé USA contact page, customers should “scroll down to ‘Leave Us a Message,’ click on ‘Complaint,’ select ‘Recall’ from the drop down menu, attach a photo of the mug or the gift set identifier code, complete the form and hit send.”
