Number of Americans filing for unemployment declines

The number of people filing first-time unemployment claims fell by 12,000 to 214,000 for the week ending Oct. 5. The total number of Americans collecting unemployment checks rose by 21,000 to 1.39 million for the week ending Oct. 8.
