Orlando Cat Café Offers Franchise Model For Interactive Feline Experience

January 14, 2025

Orlando Cat Café has become the first cat café in the United States to offer a franchise model for an interactive feline experience where customers can enjoy a beverage and snack — and perhaps take home a new furry friend.

A press release revealed that the successful business model has become a destination for those who love coffee, animals, and a relaxed atmosphere. The original café is located in Clermont, Florida.

This specialty shop offers customers the experience of interacting with adoptable cats while enjoying hot or cold beverages and baked goods. This model has served as a facilitator for over 2,800 cat adoptions in partnership with SPCA, Florida.

The Orlando Cat Café is offering a franchise model to business owners nationwide. It offers support including site selection, training, operational guidance, and marketing assistance for those individuals interested in opening a similar model in their home state. Furthermore, franchisees will have the added benefit of established relationships with animal welfare organizations.

Sandra Cagan, founder and CEO of Orlando Cat Café, stated, “We’re thrilled to be the first to bring a franchise opportunity to the cat café concept. This is more than just a business; it’s a movement to create spaces where people can unwind, connect, and make a difference in the lives of rescue cats. We’ve fine-tuned the model here in Orlando, and now we’re ready to share it with the world.”

Cagan continued, “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to open their cat café and bring this unique experience to their communities. This is about spreading joy, fostering connections, and finding forever homes for cats.”

Where Did The Idea for a Cat Café Originate?

The idea of a cat café originated in Taiwan in 1998. The first cat cafe, Cat Flower Garden, opened in Taipei. The concept then spread to Japan, where it became very popular.

According to the website The Neighbors Cat, Asia leads the way with over 400 such cafés across Japan, Taiwan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Europe introduced its very first cat café in 2012 in Vienna. Lady Dinah’s Cat Emporium in London has become Europe’s most famous cat café, and Europe is the second-largest cat café region, with over 100 cat cafes currently open.

The website explains how the idea works. In some cases, there is a cover charge for one hour in the café, which helps pay for the expenses, veterinary bills, and other necessities for the cats in residence. Some cafés allow for complimentary beverages, while others charge a separate fee.

For some patrons, these cafés provide a way to interact with those who love cats but are perhaps unable to have them due to renters’ restrictions. Other patrons find the cats calming and relaxing, providing a therapeutic environment for those who may be lonely or stressed.
