Premium and Healthier Food Options Gain Traction
May 26, 2024
As consumers become more mindful of their spending, the global sales of cooking ingredients and meals saw a notable increase of 4.4% in 2023, driven by inflation and higher commodity prices, according to Euromonitor International. This trend underscores a shift in consumer behavior toward more economical choices while still showing a preference for premium, healthier, and environmentally sustainable options.
Health and nutrition have become paramount for many shoppers, with a growing willingness to pay more for products that boast better health benefits. The market has seen a rising demand for options that reduce sugar, are high in fiber and protein, and cater to lactose-free diets. This health-conscious trend is even permeating traditionally indulgent categories, reflecting a broader shift toward healthier eating habits.
Plant-based alternatives have also surged in popularity, moving from niche to more mainstream acceptance. Consumer trust in labels like “vegan” has strengthened, driving growth in plant-based dietary claims, especially in meals and soups. Despite this progress, these products still have relatively low market penetration, suggesting significant potential for future growth.
Environmental sustainability is another critical factor influencing consumer choices. Interest is expanding beyond organic labels to include a variety of sustainable sourcing claims. This trend is particularly evident in categories such as sauces, dips, and condiments, where responsible marine sourcing labels are gaining traction.
The economic pressures of 2023 led many consumers to adopt more frugal shopping habits for essential goods. This included a noticeable shift from dining out to purchasing ready meals as a cost-saving measure. Additionally, many turned to promotions, discount retailers, and private labels to reduce expenses on items needed for home-cooked recipes. Despite these cost-cutting strategies, there was a significant increase in the demand for premium products, particularly in the segments of ready meals and sauces. This indicates a growing divide among consumers: while some prioritize savings, others are willing to invest in high-quality, gourmet products that offer convenience and superior taste.
In addition to these trends, new retail solutions are emerging to enhance the convenience of ready-meal offerings. Innovations include dedicated ready meal stores and vending machines designed to cater to workers with unconventional schedules, reflecting a shift toward greater convenience and accessibility in food retail.
