    • Amazon is enjoying success with its Prime Big Deal Days event, with shoppers primarily buying apparel and shoes, household essentials, home goods, and beauty. However, nearly half (48%) of shoppers polled indicated that ongoing tariffs had affected their event spend (via Chain Store Age).
    • Temu is under examination, by a German office, over concerns that it may be influencing the pricing of third-party merchants. “We are investigating the suspicion that Temu could impose inadmissible requirements on merchants’ pricing on the German marketplace,” said office president Andreas Mundt

    • Costco is attracting younger customers, according to an internal report. The warehouse club indicated that nearly half of members who signed up with a new membership in the three months ending Aug. 31 were under the age of 40 (via FOX Business).
    • Johnson & Johnson was ordered, by a Los Angeles jury, to pay $966 to a plaintiff after the company was found liable in a suit alleging that its talc-based products could, in some rare cases, lead to cancer. The company stopped selling talc-based baby powder stateside in 2020 (via CNN Business).
    • Christmas retailers are warning of a coming inventory shortage pertaining to artificial Christmas trees, lights, wreaths, and other holiday decor items. National Tree Company CEO Chris Butler said, “We are definitely going to see a short supply this year. So if you’re a consumer and you are in the market for Christmas goods this year, I would definitely act now and get ahead of the curve” (via CNBC).
    • Domino’s is embarking on its first major brand refresh in 13 years. New employee uniforms, pizza boxes, redesigned signage, and marketing campaigns are on the immediate horizon (via CNN Business).

    • Catalyst Brands is expecting to hire more than 13,000 seasonal employees this holiday season. The parent company of Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand, Nautica and JCPenney is hosting two hiring events, with the first taking place from Oct. 17 through Oct. 19 (via press release).
    • Bed Bath & Beyond plans to launch a national franchise system, allowing corporate stores to exist side-by-side with franchise operations. Franchise documentation is expected to be finalized within six months (via Chain Store Age).
    • McCormick delivered beats on both sales and profit fronts, with sticky demand for its higher-priced spices and seasonings bolstering its bottom line despite ongoing macroeconomic turbulence (via Reuters).
    • Constellation Brands outpaced Wall Street expectations on revenue and earnings per share, while also reiterating a lower full-year guidance in response to larger market headwinds (via CNBC).
    • Amazon is building a new facility in Indiana, one which leverages technology to improve the e-commerce giant’s fulfillment network. The fulfillment center will be located in Greenfield, and is slated to come in at a size of 1 million square feet (via Chain Store Age).
    • Mattel is partnering with OpenAI on its Sora 2 AI video model. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Mattel has been testing Sora 2, using the tech to “bring product ideas to life more quickly” (via Reuters).

    • Rite Aid has closed all its remaining 89 stores following a May bankruptcy filing. “All Rite Aid stores have now closed. We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support,” the company said in a statement (via CNN Business).
    • U.S. online holiday sales are expected to improve by 5.3%, according to Adobe data, reaching a new record of $253.4 billion. Mobile devices are anticipated to be used for a majority of orders, representing a 56.1% share (via Chain Store Age).
    • Costco expects to partner with Novo Nordisk to offer access to GLP-1 drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic at a substantial discount for Costco members (via FOX Business).
    • Tesla is seemingly teasing the launch of a “stripped down” Model Y in the near future. The move comes as the automaker has signaled a lineup of more affordable vehicles in the days to come (via Elektrek).
    • Nike CEO Elliott Hill indicated that the company’s turnaround plan was going well, but also that it would “take a while” for Nike to see a return to profitable growth. Hill has served as CEO for nearly a year (via CNBC).
    • 1-800-Flowers.com has named Melanie Babcock as chief marketing and growth officer. Babcock previously served, for nearly a decade, in a variety of executive roles at The Home Depot (via Chain Store Age).
