- President Trump has announced a 10% tariff on softwood lumber and timber, in addition to a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets, vanities, and upholstered wooden furniture. These tariffs come into effect Oct. 14 (via CNN Business).
- Ralph Lauren is expanding its suite of offerings by opening a restaurant in London, U.K. The Polo Bar Ralph Lauren is slated to open in 2028 and promises a “refined” dining experience (via The Globe and Mail).
- Amazon announced a $1.9 billion investment effort in support of its delivery service partners. The investment aims to help said DSPs improve driver wages to a national average of ~$23 per hour (via Chain Store Age).
- Hertz Global has launched a fully online car-purchasing marketplace, leveraging the growing demand for used vehicles. The company’s shares trended upward by as much as 2.5% following release of the news (via Reuters).
- Coty launched a strategic review which could result in the eventual sale of notable brands such as CoverGirl and Rimmel. Coty indicated a potential pivot toward its more profitable fragrances segment (via Reuters).
- Coach is opening up coffee shops in an effort to boost foot traffic to its locations, spurring increased spend from those who visit its stores. Plans exist to open between 12 and 15 of these shops per year (via CNBC).

- Electronic Arts is slated to go private via a $55 billion deal involving Saudi Arabian investment, as well as support from a Jared Kushner-backed investment firm (via CNN Business).
- U.S. holiday shoppers appear poised to set a budget for the season’s spend, with 58% of those polled saying as much, per RetailMeNot data. The average spend this year is pegged at an estimated $913 (via Chain Store Age).
- Kroger announced the expansion of its partnership with DoorDash. As of Oct. 1, Kroger customers can use DoorDash to gain access to products from almost 2,700 locations (via Chain Store Age).
- PepsiCo is leaning even harder into the burgeoning “dirty soda” trend, following up its successful Pepsi Wild Cherry & Cream flavor with two new offerings, Dirty Dew and Mug Floats Vanilla Howler. Both are set to be revealed in a few weeks at a Chicago trade show (via CNBC).
- Nike investors will be zeroed in on the company’s marketing plans for the upcoming year, particularly given the brand’s taste for expensive campaigns in the most recent year ending in May as well as its ongoing turnaround effort (via Reuters).
- McDonald’s is reintroducing its Monopoly game stateside after a decade-long hiatus, this time with a focus on a digital game board versus a previously physical game board available to franchise fans (via CNN Business).

- U.S. consumer spending continues to show relative strength, according to Commerce Department figures. Spending was up 0.6%, or 0.4% adjusted for inflation, in August, despite ongoing inflationary pressure and tariff concerns (via CNN Business).
- Halloween candy price hikes are being noted by U.S. consumers, per Trax data. A sizable majority (79%) indicated they will be trimming back their Halloween candy budget this year, and an even greater cohort (86%) indicated they had noticed the price of sugary treats moving upward (via Chain Store Age).
- Amazon has reached a historic settlement with the FTC to the tune of $2.5 billion, with $1.5 billion of that sum being directed to refunding customers “harmed by their deceptive Prime enrollment practices,” per an agency press release (via CNN Business).
- Costco beat Q4 estimates on both the profit and revenue fronts, with a consumer focus on value seemingly driving strength for the warehouse club (via Reuters).
- Walmart is partnering with Spanish soccer league La Liga, aiming to grow the American fanbase for the sport through a number of activations (via CNBC).
- President Trump announced a new raft of tariff measures to come into effect Oct. 1. Pharmaceuticals, home goods, and heavy trucks, in particular, will see new tariff measures applied (via FOX Business).
