January 14, 2024
On Jan. 13, the Retail Orphan Initiative (RetailROI) held its 15th annual SuperSaturday in New York City. This event aims to forge connections between charities and retail organizations nationwide, with a focus on raising awareness and providing support for vulnerable children and orphans across the globe.
Dubbed “Tech and Tears,” the event featured insightful discussions on retail technology, sponsored by industry leaders such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Intel, Toshiba, and IBM.
Darryl McDaniels, a member of the iconic hip-hop group Run-DMC, delivered the keynote address, passionately expressing his commitment to charity work and aiding children in need.
Distinguished panelists included Kevin Ertell, former VP of global operations for Nike; Giancarlo Fiorarancio, VP of store and omnichannel technology at Dollar Tree; Ben Pivar, SVP and CIO of Carter’s; John Phillips, SVP of supply chain and go-to-market for PepsiCo; Nicole Taylor, executive director of CFK; Cindy Lincks, VP of operations for KULE; Vicki Cantrell, CEO of Vendors in Partnership; Jenna Posner, chief digital officer of Solo Brands; and Michael Martin, EVP of Elior North America.
A total of 19 charities participated in this year’s SuperSaturday. A spokesperson from RetailROI emphasized the organization’s mission to raise and grant funds to support underprivileged children. “There are some people that are strictly just foster care, and there are other people that have an orphanage in Haiti or Liberia that they work with,” she explained. “We raise money today so that we can provide grants to the charities.”
RetailROI reported that the sponsorships for SuperSaturday have positively impacted more than 325,000 children since its inception. Last year, over 220 retail professionals gathered for the event to contribute to the cause and network.
In a statement on its event page, RetailROI expressed, “You will be challenged professionally, intellectually, and emotionally and never more proud of our industry.”
