Risk Factor Elevated for Walmart Chicken Broth Recall
January 23, 2025
Recalled chicken Broth sold at Walmart in nine U.S. states has been upgraded to a “Class II” risk level by the Food and Drug Administration.
The initial recall was initiated on Dec. 11, 2024, for 2,023 cases of 48-ounce Great Value chicken broth. The broth’s packaging may have compromised the product’s sterility. Subsequently, this could lead to the product spoiling.
The recalled products have a “best if used by” date of March 25, 2026, and feature a UPC of 007874206684. Since the initial announcement, the recall risk factor has been elevated.
The recalling firm is TreeHouse Foods of British Columbia, Canada, according to Newsweek. The broth was sold in Walmart stores in nine U.S. states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a statement from Walmart read, as published by TODAY. “As soon as we were made aware of the issue, we took action to remove all impacted (products) from … select, impacted stores. We are continuing to work with the supplier to investigate.”
Typically, the FDA has three different classifications for recalls: Class I, Class II, and Class III. On Jan. 21, 2025, the FDA classified the Great Value Brand of chicken broth as a Class II.
According to the FDA’s website, a Class II recall is “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote”

On Dec. 31, 2024, the FDA issued a precautionary advisory of a single production lot of washed and ready-to-eat 12-ounce Marketside Broccoli Florets with a “best if used by” date of Dec. 10, 2024. Customers who freeze this product for later use should discard it and not eat it.
Also in December, Palermo Palermo Villa, Inc. issued a recall of 1,728 Connie’s Thin Crust Cheese Frozen Pizzas because of a possible plastic foreign contaminant. As with any recalled items, Walmart suggests returning to the store for a refund or discarding the items at home.
