Rivian’s Big Reveal: R2, R3, and R3X

March 7, 2024

Rivian, the electric vehicle company, pulled back the curtain on its latest creations during a recent livestream and revealed its latest models. The highly anticipated R2 electric SUV made its debut alongside some unexpected guests — the R3 and R3X models.

The R2, as was previously speculated, is a compact SUV with a sleek design. Offering a range of at least 300 miles per charge, thanks to innovative battery technology and a new cell design, it promises convenience for owners with its NACS chargeport compatibility and the upcoming Rivian Adventure Network charging stations.

Under the hood of each electric vehicle, the R2 comes in three motor configurations: single-motor rear-wheel drive, dual-motor all-wheel drive, and the powerhouse tri-motor version. The latter can go from zero to 60 mph in just three seconds, making it the fastest version by a considerable margin.

Inside the vehicle’s cabin space, drivers will find an almost futuristic infotainment system with various improved self-driving features, courtesy of multiple cameras and radars strategically placed throughout the vehicle’s body design.

With a starting price of $45,000, the R2 offers ample space for five passengers and generous cargo capacity, including a front trunk or “frunk.” Preorders are open now, with deliveries slated for 2026.

The R3 model, a smaller sibling to the R2, offers similar features in a more compact package. It comes in single, dual, and tri-motor versions, though specifics on range are yet to be disclosed.

Finally, the R3X adds a touch of adventure with its dune buggy-inspired design and rugged interior. Pricing and availability for the R3 and R3X remain under wraps.

While Rivian’s vehicle lineup has the opportunity to impress consumers, the company has been dealing with ongoing challenges. Recent layoffs, including job cuts at its Illinois factory, raise concerns despite the excitement surrounding its latest offerings.
