Samsung Introduces Generative AI Gauss for Its Devices Before Apple

November 8, 2023

At the Samsung AI Forum 2023, Samsung engaged with AI industry experts to “discuss and share the development and the latest technological trends of AI” and announced Samsung Gauss, “the generative AI model developed by Samsung Research.”

According to Samsung’s official news statement, day two of the forum, which was led by Samsung Research, focused on generative AI. “The rapid progress of generative AI technology is a paradigm shift that is expected to reshape both daily life and work,” the statement explained.

Samsung Gauss will feature a triple suite of On-Device AI technologies aimed at enhancing work efficiency and consumer experiences by drawing insights from world phenomena and knowledge, echoing the vision of the renowned mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss.

The Samsung Gauss suite contains three components: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image.

First, Samsung Gauss Language assists users in tasks like drafting emails, summarizing documents, and translating content, and it can be integrated into products for smarter device control.

Samsung Gauss Code, along with a coding assistant named code.i, is geared toward in-house software development. It simplifies coding and facilitates tasks, such as code description and test case generation, through an intuitive interface.

The third component, Samsung Gauss Image, is an image model capable of generating and editing images — including making style changes and additions — and converting low-resolution images to high-resolution.

“We will continue to support and collaborate with the industry and academia on generative AI research.”

Though Gauss is currently used for enhancing employee productivity, Samsung plans to extend it to a variety of product applications for improved user experiences in the near future.

Committed to safe AI usage, Samsung also operates an AI Red Team to proactively address any potential security and privacy issues in its AI models, from data collection to service deployment, always keeping AI ethics at the forefront.

In comparison to Samsung, its biggest smartphone rival Apple has not yet announced a similar generative AI product. According to CNBC, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said during last month’s earnings call that the company has “work going on” related to generative AI, but he didn’t give any additional details.
