Smoked Salmon From Costco Recalled Amid Listeria Contamination Concerns
October 29, 2024
Certain smoked salmon products sold at Costco have been recalled over a possible listeria contamination.
Acme Smoked Fish Corp., a company that provides smoked salmon to Costco under the warehouse store’s Kirkland Signature brand, issued a voluntary recall of certain packages of smoked salmon. In an Oct. 22, 2024, letter to Costco members, Acme Smoked Fish said it was issuing the recall “with an abundance of caution” due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
Packages that have the lot number 8512801270 should be returned to Costco for a full refund. The company shared its distress over the “unfortunate incident” and declared that it has taken “immediate corrective steps to ensure that this issue never happens again.”
The affected products were on sale between Oct. 9 and Oct. 13, 2024. The company also advised consumers to call Acme Smoked Fish at 718-383-8585 with any questions or concerns.
Contamination Issues Continue Within the Food Industry
In the past several months, there have been several high-profile issues with contamination within the food industry. Not all of these cases are connected to food purchased at supermarkets or big-box stores.
Recently, 75 people across 13 states have fallen ill in an E. coli outbreak attributed to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said in an update on Friday, Oct. 25. Thus far, McDonald’s believes the Quarter Pounder is the only affected menu item and the listeria outbreak was believed to have originated from the raw slivered onions served atop the burgers. The chain originally pulled the item from its menu, but as of Oct. 28, the Quarter Pounder is once again available — just without any onion.
In July of this year, Boar’s Head implemented a voluntary recall of its liverwurst products. The company said in a statement that they “have been conducting an exhaustive investigation into how our liverwurst product became adulterated.” The company’s ongoing investigation identified the cause of the product’s contamination as a process that only occurred at its Jarratt facility, which only produced liverwurst. Thus, Boars Head decided to permanently discontinue production of the sandwich product and close the facility indefinitely.
