Subway Is Reportedly Releasing Footlong Doritos Nachos

December 18, 2024

Subway continues to try to entice customers into its stores, with rumors of a new footlong snack debuting on menus nationwide.

Allrecipes reports that the Connecticut-based restaurant has been working hard to develop a range of other items, such as footlong sidekicks and dippers, to give customers more value. Still, it hasn’t been able to bring back its affordable sandwich prices.

Though the company has not yet verified it, there are rumors that Subway, well-known for its “Eat Fresh” tagline, might be experimenting with Doritos Footlong Nachos. The popular Instagram food blogger @snackolator recently informed followers of the drop.

“Subway is getting wild with the footlong menu with Doritos Footlong Nachos! They are currently being tested in a number of stores around the country and feature Doritos…topped with melted cheese, meat, toppings, and some additional sauces,” read the caption in the announcement.

The sandwich business has been testing the footlong nachos in the United States and Canada, but a possible nationwide release won’t happen until spring, the report continues.

Subway May Be ‘Gobbled Up’ by the Competition

Despite the sandwich chain’s best efforts, reports suggest that it may be “gobbled up” by the competition, Jersey Mike’s.

The New York Post claims that the grim headlines starkly contrasted with recent reports from Jersey Mike’s, a much smaller competitor. The chain sold itself to the Blackstone Group for $8 billion, which was not much more than what Subway had obtained from Roark Capital six months before, even though it only has 3,000 U.S. locations compared to Subway’s 20,000.

The outlet interviewed Robert Zarco, a lawyer with the North American Association of Subway Franchisees. Zarco asserted that Jimmy John’s practice of “ignoring” franchisees has made the sandwich business susceptible.

“If Subway keeps treating its franchisees the way it has over the last five years where it is ignoring their screams for help, Jersey Mike’s will have an easy task of gobbling up [the brand],” he said. “I hope it’s the reason for the change because it should have been. Because of the tensions that are prevalent, it is a good move for Roark to come in and wipe the slate clean and establish a better working relationship with the franchisees.”

The outlet further claimed that Subway has shrunk by 15% over the last four years, dropping from “23,799 US restaurants on Jan. 1, 2020 — shortly after Chidsey took the helm — to 20,133 on Jan. 1, 2024, according to public filings.”
