Target Expands Grocery Offerings Through ButcherBox Collaboration

April 11, 2025

Target and ButcherBox have collaborated to offer high-quality, ethically sourced meats delivered directly to customers’ doors.

According to a press release, Target customers can now purchase ButcherBox meat and seafood products without a subscription. Thirteen curated boxes range from $99 to $189.

“As we look to further build the ButcherBox brand, our focus is on getting intentionally sourced protein into the homes of more Americans and eliminating the subscription barrier,” said Reba Hatcher, chief commercial officer at ButcherBox. “Target Plus has done an incredible job curating brands and products that will add value to their guests’ online experience, and we believe the addition of ButcherBox allows us to provide our premium products to Target’s guests in a new way without subscription costs.”

ButcherBox was able to integrate smoothly into the Target Plus ecosystem using the Shopify Marketplace Connect app. “Being a Shopify-based e-commerce company, our relationship with Shopify was integral to launching on Target Plus,” Hatcher shared. “Target’s demographic of families and health-conscious individuals aligns perfectly with our target market and the seamless integration between the two platforms.”

What Are Some of the Items Available in the Target and ButcherBox Collaboration?

Target now features several curated ButcherBox options, including:

  • $99 Variety Box: Includes 4.63 pounds of premium meats, such as grass-fed beef, organic chicken, and crate-free pork.
  • Meal Prep Variety Box ($179): Offers 12.5 pounds of proteins like wild-caught sockeye salmon, ground turkey, organic chicken, and grass-fed beef, ideal for meal planning.
  • Kid’s Favorites Box ($119): Contains 7 pounds of kid-friendly items, including chicken nuggets, beef burgers, hot dogs, meatballs, and bacon.
  • Ground Meat Variety Box ($149): Features 11 pounds of assorted ground meats, such as beef, bison, pork, turkey, and lamb.

ButcherBox was founded in 2015 by Mike Salguero, driven by a personal mission to make high-quality, ethically sourced meat more accessible. The idea emerged when Salguero sought cleaner meat options to support his wife, who was managing Hashimoto’s Syndrome. This quest led him to a local cattle farmer, where he experienced firsthand the superior taste and quality of grass-fed beef. Realizing the challenges consumers faced in accessing such products, Salguero was inspired to create a more convenient solution, per the ButcherBox website.

Mashed reported that ButcherBux launched with a sales goal of $25,000 through a Kickstarter campaign, but it quickly surpassed expectations by raising over $200,000 in pre-sales within the first 30 days. This overwhelming response validated the demand for responsibly sourced meat delivered directly to consumers’ doors. Through its direct-to-consumer model, ButcherBox continues to disrupt the traditional meat industry by prioritizing transparency, sustainability, and ethical sourcing practices.
