Hefty Money Laundering Fines
The news of these TD Bank closures comes after the company’s announcement in October 2024 that it would pay over $3 billion in fines to the United States government for engaging in money laundering practices.
“Today, TD Bank also became the largest bank in U.S. history to plead guilty to Bank Secrecy Act program failures, and the first U.S. bank in history to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering,” said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland at the time. “TD Bank chose profits over compliance with the law — a decision that is now costing the bank billions of dollars in penalties.”
According to Garland, employees frequently made jokes about the bank’s permissive money laundering policies. Even senior management was aware of the possible criminal behavior occurring but took no action to stop it.
Wally Adeyemo, the deputy secretary of the Treasury, referred to TD Bank’s continued disregard as “fertile ground” for financing illicit activities such as human and drug trafficking. According to reports, one individual was able to transfer $470 million in illicit funds through TD branches due to the bank’s extremely loose standards. They reportedly deposited over $1 million “more than once” and took it out through checks and wire transfers on the same day. Despite their alarm, bank officials allowed the transactions to proceed.
According to reports, around $18.3 trillion in consumer activity was entirely overlooked before the government stepped in. However, TD Bank is currently making a concerted effort to change things, including hiring experts and removing executives.
“We know what the issues are, we are fixing them. As we move forward, we’re ensuring that this never happens again,” said TD Bank Group CEO Bharat Masrani, as reported by NPR. “And I’m 100% confident that we get to the other side and emerge even stronger.”
