Trader Joe’s has announced that it will open new stores nationwide in 2025. These stores indicate the grocery chain’s intention to grow exponentially in 2025 and beyond. Let’s look at the locations that can expect a new store this year.

“Growing at a pretty good rate right now, adding more and more stores,” stated Tara Miller, vice president of marketing, in an October Inside Trader Joe’s podcast episode.

Additionally, she stated that the chain was “growing at a pace that we can sustain.”

The company considers “where people are” when choosing locations for new stores, according to co-host Matt Sloan.

“It could be an area where there is no currently available Trader Joe’s store,” he said during the episode. “Although it might be an area that’s really densely populated and traffic patterns are such that getting from one Trader Joe’s to another neighborhood, it may be close, but it might take a really long time, that could be interesting.”

Per Sloan, however, the company is “not interested in growth by just buying another chain and putting a different sign on the building.” He explained, “It wouldn’t really feel like a neighborhood Trader Joe’s. So, we’re looking at things that are opportunities for us to make that neighborhood store a great Trader Joe’s for that area.”

The Site Selection Process

The time it takes to train staff members who are frequently new to Trader Joe’s is also reflected in the strategic approach to expansion.

Sloan added that social media requests from customers to open a store in their community “don’t have much, if any, impact” on the choice of location, pointing out that site selection is ultimately a “business decision” that considers a variety of other factors.

Sloan claims that Trader Joe’s, which has more than 550 stores, is now evaluating more than 1,000 possible locations to see which have the best chance of succeeding.

“With such a deliberate process and so much time and energy behind it, none of this is casual. We’re not just flippantly opening a store location to see like maybe that works and then closing it a few years later. This is very deliberate, and for us, what’s important is that it’s controlled growth,” he said.

An area with no stores, or one with a higher population density that has other Trader Joe’s but traffic patterns make it difficult for local customers to go to other locations, could be the perfect spot.

Another important criterion for choosing a site is having enough parking. “We want to make sure that we’re putting stores in places where it’s relatively easy to get in and out,” Sloan stated during the podcast.

“We’d like to be in neighborhoods all around the country, but it takes time,” he continued. “We’re not going to rush it because rushing it would result in stores that don’t live up to our expectations or quite honestly, to our customers’ expectations.”
