April 19, 2024
Trader Joe’s has issued a recall for its organic basil product.
The company is recalling its Infinite Herbs Organic Basil product due to a possible salmonella contamination. The item is sold in 2.5-ounce clamshell packages.
The recalled Infinite Herbs Organic Basil products were sold between Feb. 1, 2024, and April 6, 2024. They were sold in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Wisconsin stores. The UPC number on the affected product is 8 18042 02147 7.
Trader Joe’s Food Safety Overview reports that the company believes “nothing is more important” than its customers’ and crew members’ health and safety. The stores work daily to ensure their products meet stringent food safety expectations. “We don’t take any chances when it comes to product safety and quality,” the website states.

The company stresses that it errs on the side of caution, acting proactively to address issues. “We voluntarily take action quickly, aggressively investigating potential problems and removing the product from sale if there is any doubt about its safety or quality,” it claims.
Trader Joe’s also states that if a recall of one of its products becomes necessary, it will immediately provide its customers with full details of the item, how to return it, and the possible issues linked to it. The supermarket chain claims its recall communications go beyond necessary regulatory requirements. It shares news through in-store signs, websites, and email alerts.
The CDC and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a press release that 12 people across seven states have been infected with an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium so far. Seven of the eight people who provided information noted that they had been exposed to fresh organic basil purchased from Trader Joe’s before becoming ill.
Customers who purchased Infinite Herbs Organic Basil products during the date range above should discard the item or return it to any Trader Joe’s for a full refund. Customers with questions may contact Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at 626-599-3817.
