U.S. consumer spending surges in the wake of the hurricanes

The Commerce Department reported today that last month consumer spending saw its biggest jump since August of 2009 largely on the robust sale of automobiles as storm affected consumers replaced the vehicles they lost. As it happens, the August 2009 surge occurred as a result of the fed's "cash-for-clunkers" auto sales incentive program.
