Walmart Wants Associates, Not Gig Workers, To Deliver More Orders as the Retailer Struggles To Verify the Identity of Its Spark Drivers
September 15, 2023
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon announced a shift in their delivery strategy, aiming to have more store associates handle online order deliveries, reducing reliance on gig workers through the Spark Driver app. McMillon stated that while independent contractors dominate deliveries through platforms like Spark, the number of associate deliveries is currently very small in comparison. Walmart’s Spark Driver service, similar to Instacart and DoorDash, has seen a significant increase in drivers over the past year but also faced challenges with identity verification and competition among drivers.
