Walmart Introduces WIC Online Shopping in 2 States

April 4, 2025

Online shopping to Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program participants will now be available in two states for Walmart shoppers.

In separate press releases, the states’ health departments of Massachusetts and Washington State announced a deal that would allow WIC recipients to buy WIC-approved foods online for in-store pickup or delivery. In both states, WIC shoppers can use Walmart’s app and website to place orders.

This pilot program is part of an initiative by the Food and Nutrition Service at the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to improve the WIC shopping experience. Under federal guidelines, WIC-approved items have only been possible to purchase in-person from participating stores.

The process of utilizing online shopping by WIC recipients is as easy as customers adding their WIC card to a free Walmart account, www.walmart.com/WIC, or through the Walmart mobile app. Then, shoppers can purchase WIC-approved items such as infant formula, eggs, fruits, and vegetables.

“Walmart’s multi-channel capabilities provide customers with a seamless shopping experience, whether through in-store, online, pickup or delivery to help increase access to healthy foods,” Ryland Allen, vice president of baby merchandising at Walmart, said in the Washington State announcement.

“Partnering with Walmart helps WIC families who struggle with access to stores or finding WIC-approved foods nearby,” said Brittany Tybo, WIC director, Washington State Department of Health. “By innovating to provide delivery, shipping, and pickup options, we remove barriers and ensure families can easily access the healthy foods they need in a way that makes sense for them.”

Massachusetts WIC currently serves nearly half of all infants and over 125,000 individuals per month across the state. WIC families can redeem their benefits in person at more than 850 approved retailers across Massachusetts, per a health department press release.

There are more than 200 WIC clinics in Washington state, serving over 205,000 people. This includes nearly half of all babies born, 33% of pregnant people, and almost 25% of children under the age of 5, according to the state’s health department.

The pilot project runs through Dec. 31, 2025.

What Walmart Customers Are Eligible for WIC?

According to the USDA, WIC is available for income-eligible pregnant and postpartum women, breastfeeding moms, and children under 5. Dads, grandparents, foster parents, and anyone raising kids under 5 can apply for support for the kids in their care.

Also eligible are postpartum women up to six months after the end of their pregnancy. Breastfeeding moms are eligible to receive food benefits until their babies turn one.

If parents or their children receive Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), they are already income-eligible for WIC.
