Wendy’s Long-Awaited Krabby Patty Gets Fan Pushback

October 10, 2024

Wendy’s recently dropped the Krabby Patty as part of its long-awaited collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePants, but some fans aren’t happy.

According to Cracked, the basic recipe for a Krabby Patty is well-known to all diehard SpongeBob fans: bun, patty, ketchup, mustard, pickles, onions, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, and bun in that order. In a similar vein, all ardent fans of SpongeBob will be aware of the mystery behind the patty that the late series creator Stephen Hillenburg planted — and it has nothing to do with love.

Since there are no non-anthropomorphized animals or cows underwater, Hillenburg insisted that the iconic Krabby Patty had to be a veggie burger to maintain the internal logic of his underwater kids’ show without defying logic or frightening off young vegetarians.

Furthermore, SpongeBob creator Hillenburg was against fast food in general and insisted that his characters never serve real kids actual burgers and fries from such joints.

Thus, according to the outlet, “SpongeBob fans wondered whether the price of the deal factored in all the shovels and man-hours Wendy’s used to turn Hillenburg over in his grave.”

Wendy’s Launched the Collaboration Earlier This Month

In addition to the controversial Krabby Patty, Wendy’s collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePants also features a pineapple-flavored “Under the Sea” Frosty.

This new partnership between the well-known children’s television program and the fast-food behemoth was first revealed by popular Instagram user @mnmtwinz. According to the account, starting as of Oct. 8, the Frosty with a SpongeBob theme is now accessible for a limited time. This frozen treat is a tropical take on Wendy’s classic Vanilla Frosty, made with a rich Pineapple Mango puree.

“Had it already even better with vodka,” wrote one commenter, while another wrote, “Love my chocolate Frosty, but might try it for SpongeBob. Flavor sounds like it could be good!”

Wendy’s also emerged as the winner of the so-called “fast-food wars” with its recent Halloween-themed promotions and 1-cent cheeseburgers in honor of National Cheeseburger Day, which fell on Sept. 18.
