Where do holiday returns go? It's complicated.

According to tech firm Optoro, only about half of consumer goods returned after the holidays make it back into the original retailers' inventories for resale. About one quarter are sent back to manufacturers, and the balance are sold, usually at a substantial loss, to liquidators and discounters. Ultimately, much of the merchandise winds up in landfills.
