With Retail Sales Riding High, Why So Glum?

While MasterCard's SpendingPulse had retail and services spiking 5.5 percent for the Nov. 5 through Dec. 24 period, the Conference Board's consumer confidence index slipped from 54.3 in November to 52.5 this month, suggesting to some analysts that retail sales may fall off after the holidays.
