Zoom Premieres Its App for Apple’s Vision Pro

January 30, 2024

As Apple gears up for the well-anticipated launch of the Vision Pro this Friday, Zoom announced on Monday that its upcoming visionOS app will be released on the same day.

This new app from the video conferencing platform will bring a range of innovative options for users, such as “persona” support that will allow users to use a digital avatar when on calls, a chat function, 3D object sharing, and other features.

Apple’s Persona function takes a scan of the user and gives them a digitally characterized version of themselves in Vision Pro. The visionOS app on Zoom supports Persona, allowing participants in meetings to visually see facial expressions and body gestures to give a real-life look and feel. Zoom on Vision Pro will also utilize the headset’s augmented reality technology, which means video calls will have a floating window that merges in with a user’s physical surroundings, according to TechCrunch.

Zoom’s blog post said, “Zoom on Apple Vision Pro creates an immersive experience that can be scaled to the perfect size, which is ideal for users wanting to feel like they are in the same room as their colleagues and customers, without the need for additional physical equipment or setup.”

As visionOS apps have a three-dimensional interface, users can share 3D files in Zoom itself and see objects come to life in their surroundings. Zoom has used game design as an example to explain how designers can “collaborate and share the latest character model” with colleagues. However, the 3D object-sharing feature won’t be released when the app launches this Friday, but the company says it will come out in the spring of this year.

Team Chat is another valuable feature that won’t be released until the spring, along with a feature called “real-world pinning” by Zoom. Team Chat is Zoom’s version of Slack, which allows users to instantly communicate with ease in messenger style and share information with colleagues. The video conferencing platform launched its chat feature back in March 2023.

When Apple’s Vision Pro pre-sale took place last week, many flocked to buy them, and a lot of the headsets ended up on eBay with a marked-up price tag. The official price for the headset is $3,499, and it will feature around 200 attached apps, which include streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Max, Discovery+, Paramount+, and many more.
