“We always take these decisions very seriously,” said Tom Kingsbury, Kohl’s CEO at the time, in a statement. “As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

Closures Initially Announced Last Month

The closure of these Kohl’s locations was first announced in January 2025, though the exact locations affected by the announcement were not disclosed at the time.

According to CNN, that was one of the final decisions taken by retiring CEO Tom Kingsbury. The following week, he stepped down and was replaced by Ashley Buchanan, CEO of Michaels, an arts and crafts company. Kingsbury will remain a member of the company’s board of directors and an advisor to Buchanan until his retirement in May.

Kohl’s stock has plunged by over 40% over the last six months. In 2022, the company was embroiled in a legal battle with activist investors who sought to force Kohl’s to sell its real estate, spin off its internet section, or go private. Additionally, the retailer stated that it was considering a sale in 2022.

Kohl’s is also just the latest retailer to announce the closure of its stores. Macy’s stated in late December that it would close 65 more shops by the end of the fiscal year, bringing the total number of closures to more than the retail titan had projected.

According to the company’s third-quarter results report, Macy’s planned to eliminate 65 shops by the end of the fiscal year, up from 50 announced in February 2024, as reported by CBS News.

During an earnings call, Macy’s CEO Tony Spring accepted the new amount and emphasized that the majority of closures would occur after the holiday season. “We now expect to close roughly 65 locations this year, in line with our typical cadence,” he said.

By 2026, Macy’s intends to close 150 “unproductive” stores, or roughly 30% of its total locations, and invest in 350 “go-forward” stores. This decision is part of a larger campaign called “A Bold New Chapter,” unveiled last year.
