E. coli outbreaks open market opportunity for greenhouse growers

Another case of E. coli contamination of romaine lettuce tied to more than 100 people across the country becoming ill is leading some food retailers and restaurants to look for suppliers who grow their plants indoors. Produce contaminated with E. coli nearly always comes from irrigation water used on fields, according to Kirk Smith, director of the Minnesota Integrated Food Safety Center of Excellence.
