Thanksgiving 2024: Which Supermarkets Are Open, & Which Are Closed?
November 27, 2024
Thanksgiving is a time to honor the spirit of giving, family, and togetherness. Turkey Day always calls for a few last-minute ingredients for individuals preparing meals for their loved ones. So, which supermarkets can you visit if you need that last bag of potatoes or a unique spice?
Thanksgiving 2024: Which Grocers Are Open?
According to Asbury Park Press, both Costco and Sam’s Club will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Meanwhile, a lot of ShopRite stores offer alternative hours for the holiday. Customers should inquire about operating hours from their local ShopRite. The modified hours for all Stop & Shop locations will be 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Stop & Shop store locator is a good resource for shoppers in need of last-minute necessities to ensure their local Stop & Shop is open.
Meanwhile, Target and Walmart will both be closed on the holiday, as will ALDI, Trader Joe’s, Winn-Dixie, and Publix.
The majority of CVS locations will be operating during regular business hours, however some might be closed or have restricted hours. On Sept. 16, Walgreens declared that the majority of its stores would be closed on Thanksgiving for the second year in a row. The business claims that its 500 24-hour stores will continue to operate.
Some Whole Foods stores will remain open on Thanksgiving, but with adjusted hours. Customers should use the Whole Foods Market shop locator if they require last-minute necessities. Stores in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island will be closed.
Other stores open on Thanksgiving, according to USA Today and Axios, include:
- Harris Teeter, closing at 2 p.m.
- Wegmans, closing at 4 p.m.
- Food Lion, with hours varying by location
- Kroger, with hours varying and most stores closing early
- Meijer, open from 6 am. to 5 p.m.
- Albertsons, most open with adjusted hours
- Sprouts Farmers Market, open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Giant Food, open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- H-E-B, open from 6 a.m. to noon
However, it is always wise to check the hours of your local store before you go.
Don’t Feel Like Cooking? Head to a Restaurant
For those who don’t feel like cooking on Turkey Day, there will be some restaurants open on the holiday.
Starbucks’ Thanksgiving hours are listed on its website, although opening times vary by location. This also applies to Dunkin’ stores, whose hours are also listed on its website. All Chick-fil-A locations will be closed on the holidays, although the majority of McDonald’s locations will remain open.
Another eatery that will remain open on Thanksgiving Day is Wendy’s. All of its restaurants are “open and ready to serve fans throughout the holiday season,” a representative for the fast-food juggernaut told USA Today. On Turkey Day, all Cracker Barrel restaurants will also be open for business.
The hours of Burger King, Subway, IHOP, and Taco Bell differ depending on the location, and some are closed entirely on Thanksgiving Day. Fans of Carl’s Jr., Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster, Chil’s, First Watch, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, Hardee’s, Outback Steakhouse, and Bonefish Grill will have to wait until Black Friday to get their fill.
However, depending on the region, Domino’s, Hooters, and Whataburger might be open on Thanksgiving, so you might want to check them out if you’re searching for a different kind of Thanksgiving meal.
One thing will be guaranteed no matter how people choose to celebrate the holidays: on Nov. 28, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will take place.
The 98th edition of the beloved event will feature character balloons, floats, musical performances, and the appearance of Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, allowing attendees both at home and along the parade route to experience the joy of the season. The parade will feature over 5,000 volunteers, 17 highlighted character balloons, 11 marching bands, 10 performing groups, 22 floats, 15 heritage and novelty balloons, and 700 clowns.
“The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a beloved tradition that marks the beginning of the holiday season for millions of live spectators and viewers across the country,” said Will Coss, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade executive producer, in a company press release. “A dedicated team of artisans and production experts at Macy’s Studios work year-round to bring this experience to life. This year’s 98th Macy’s Parade will create awe with unforgettable character balloons, one-of-a-kind floats, and the world-class entertainment only Macy’s can deliver.”
