Macy’s Is Closing 66 Stores, With Sales of Up to 90% Off All Items — See If Your Store Is On the List
March 28, 2025
Macy’s has begun closing 66 of its most underperforming stores. While this certainly is a blow to the store’s bottom line, it’s a benefit for consumers as many locations are advertising everything-must-go sales with discounts of up to 90% off the suggested retail price of goods.
The first major Macy’s closure was at the iconic Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, Long Island, New York. According to Greater Long Island, the closure of this location has turned the once-mighty mall into what’s known as a “ghost mall,” with only one retailer — Dick’s Sporting Goods — remaining in the midst.
The owner of the Sunrise Mall said it is looking into “redevelopment” of the massive space.
The Sunrise Mall location closed just days after the closure of the location at Center City in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Macy’s Insists Its “Bold New Chapter” Is Working
Despite the closures, both active and pending, the CEO insists that its “bold new chapter” is paying off for the brand.
“A Bold New Chapter was our opportunity to reimagine the Macy’s portfolio, which does include Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Bluemercury. For the Macy’s brand, it’s strengthening the Macy’s nameplate. It was listening to 60,000 customers that we talked to who were both active and inactive,” CEO Tony Spring said at the 2025 NRF Big Show held in New York City.
“What were they looking for in a shopping experience with Macy’s? They wanted a better merchandise assortment that was both private brands and market brands. They wanted a better service experience that was additional colleagues in the store and a better visual presentation. They wanted a better modern take on marketing and a better balance in our media mix between digital and traditional marketing. They were looking for a quicker supply chain. They wanted product to be arriving faster when they ordered it. They wanted things to arrive accurately. Some of the fundamentals of retail,” he added.
