Macy’s Announced the Closure of 66 Stores in 2025. These Locations Are Still Open — But Not for Long
April 22, 2025
In January, Macy’s announced the closure of 66 of its stores in 2025 as part of an effort to consolidate its assets and streamline its business. Some of these locations, however, are still open, though it won’t be for long. Is a location near you on the list?
These Macy’s Locations Are Still Open
FinanceBuzz is reporting that two Macy’s locations are still open as of this writing despite being slated for closure earlier this year.
The first location is in West Orange, New Jersey, at 459 Prospect Ave. W. This location, once popular for North Jersey-area mall-goers, is slated for closure later this year. Those in the area who wish to get their retail fix will have to check out one of the three store locations in nearby Wayne.
The second location is a bit more of an iconic one. It’s located in Queens, New York, at 88-01 Queens Blvd. in Elmhurst. This store, popular with the so-called “bridge and tunnel” crowd, has been near the popular Queens Center Mall for decades. The store, located in an unassuming cement building, is the home to a Macy’s Furniture Gallery, making it a popular home furnishing spot for those in the area.
It’s also home to a Backstage store. Macy’s Backstage is a great way for shoppers to get the Macy’s experience at a fraction of the price. Since 2015, Queens residents have been able to get clearance items here, and it’s become a staple in the bargain-hunting community.
These stores are also slated for closure later this year, and it’s unclear what will replace them. The store closures span 22 states in total.
Up to 90% Off Inventory During Store Closures
Macy’s has started shuttering 66 of its underperforming shops. While this undoubtedly is a hit to the store’s bottom line, it’s a plus for consumers, as many locations are advertising everything-must-go bargains with discounts of up to 90% off the suggested retail price of goods.
The first significant Macy’s shutdown occurred in the historic Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, Long Island, New York. According to Greater Long Island, the loss of this site has transformed the once-mighty mall into a “ghost mall,” with only one retailer remaining: Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Despite the current and pending closures, the CEO insists that the brand’s “bold new chapter” is paying off.
“A Bold New Chapter was our opportunity to reimagine the Macy’s portfolio, which does include Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and Bluemercury. For the Macy’s brand, it’s strengthening the Macy’s nameplate. It was listening to 60,000 customers that we talked to who were both active and inactive,” CEO Tony Spring said at the 2025 NRF Big Show held in New York City.
“What were they looking for in a shopping experience with Macy’s? They wanted a better merchandise assortment that was both private brands and market brands. They wanted a better service experience that was additional colleagues in the store and a better visual presentation. They wanted a better modern take on marketing and a better balance in our media mix between digital and traditional marketing. They were looking for a quicker supply chain. They wanted product to be arriving faster when they ordered it. They wanted things to arrive accurately. Some of the fundamentals of retail,” he added.
