Does David’s Bridal’s New Outlet Concept Have Long-Term Potential?

Following the July 14 debut of The Outlet Shop by David’s Bridal — a shop-in-shop discount concept launched in its McAllen, Texas location — the so-far-successful concept is being greatly expanded into new markets.

More recently, according to an August 18 press release put forth by the retailer, David’s Bridal has expanded the outlet concept to a further 47 locations, boasting that prices can be slashed by as much as 70% versus standard retail pricing. The company cited PwC data suggesting that nearly all shoppers (98%) across all income groups now purchase from off-price retailers, “while the category continues to outpace broader growth” — providing the impetus for David’s Bridal to get involved in a big way.

In celebration of the continued expansion, the original The Outlet Shop by David’s Bridal promoted a celebration on August 15, inviting the first 20 guests to take home free VIP gift bags while also offering several dress giveaways throughout the day.

The response so far has been encouraging, at least according to the retailer’s brass:

“Absolutely thrilling to see how guests responded to our test outlet stores we rolled out a few months ago. ‘A treasure hunt of fashion!’ I think that was my favorite quote from a guest who shopped at one of our outlet test stores. Feedback was overwhelming – she wants incredible fashion, exceptional value and the trusted David’s experience – with outlet pricing,” said David’s Bridal CEO Kelly Cook.

“We’re scaling this concept from a position of strength because we’re listening to our guests and giving them more of what they’re already asking for. Whether she’s planning a wedding, shopping for a special event, needs a date night dress, sparkly dancing shoes, a fun homecoming dress, or simply looking for an incredible designer find, we’re making it even easier to discover perfect dresses and accessories at unbeatable value – all with David’s signature craftsmanship and quality. Expanding nationwide allows us to bring that very value to every market we serve,” she added.

David’s Bridal Outlet Leverages Shop-in-Shop Design To Pitch Service Enhancements in Tandem With Discounted Fashions

The value proposition offered by the outlet concept emphasizes something more than pricing — given that the outlet resides within the larger David’s Bridal physical location, on-site services such as free VIP styling appointments and professional tailoring and alterations are immediately on hand.

Outlet assortments will included designer wedding gowns, bridesmaid and mother-of-the-bride dresses, wedding dresses for guests and little white dresses, shoes, accessories, prom dresses and associated fashions, special occasion gowns, and fashions for teens and children.

July 14th debut … the so-far-successful

July 14th ?!?!?! Let’s see: 1,2 3…carry the pinkie…this has been open a little over a month…way, WAY, WAY too early to be making any pronouncements about performance.

Consumers are pulling back on spending and David’s Bridal is smart to meet them there. Their shop-in-shop model rather than a standalone outlet is clever. You keep the brand intact, you still get the full service experience, and you give value shoppers a reason to walk in.
