Penney posts same-store gains, profit loss

J.C. Penney posted a surprising 1.7 percent gain in third quarter same-store sales exceeding the expectations of analysts who expected it to be in negative territory. The department store chain did, however, post a loss of $128 million for the period versus a loss of $67 million at the same time last year.
