Frito-Lay Cuts The Carbs

By George Anderson

Frito-Lay announced yesterday it would rollout a new line of lower-carb tortilla chips nationally by May.

The decision to launch the Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge chips line is another response by Frito-Lay to meet the nutritional needs of consumers. Last year, the snack manufacturer
announced it would be eliminating transfats from its chips.

The Doritos Edge and Tostitos Edge chips will have fewer than half the carbohydrates of Frito-Lay’s regular chips, according to the company. The chips will use soy proteins and
fiber to reduce carbohydrates. [George

Moderator’s Comment: How will the rollout of low-carb versions of tier one and two brands impact how retailers manage the category?

The grocery game is pay to play. Space pressure is going to be placed on smaller brands, particularly those that are warehouse delivered, without the dollars
to guarantee shelf space and support.
