Energy drink brands increase sales while reducing sugar and adding caffeine
June 9, 2023
Low-calorie and sugar-free beverages are driving sales in the energy drink category. Caffeine levels in the drinks have also increased significantly as sales in the category grew to $19 billion from $12 billion over the past five years, according to Circana.
Caffeine-enriched energy drink brands have been experiencing an unsteady growth rate according to several sources, even as other sources report growth.
With caffeine levels being increased, health experts and many others have been questioning and studying the effects these energy drinks have on the body. Since their popularity has grown tremendously over the years with viral marketing campaigns seen in commercials and now social media, growing concern is prudent.
There have been numerous studies and reports about the health consequences of energy drinks, especially when they’re highly caffeinated. With all of these factors at play, one wonders whether or not energy drinks will need warning labels on them in the same fashion as cigarette packs.
