The San Diego County Vintners Association (SDCVA) has released the 2023 San Diego County Economic Impact of Wineries report, highlighting the thriving wine industry in the region.

According to the report, San Diego County wineries experienced a record-high of $49.1 million in gross sales in 2022, representing an 11% increase from the previous year. The number of active and planned wineries also rose to 166. Despite challenges such as inflation and rising prices, many wineries have adapted and seen a return to normal business levels, with 45% reporting this. Job growth in the industry was led by newer and expanding wineries, which created an estimated 709.5 jobs in 2022, a 6% annual increase. However, wildfire insurance coverage remains a concern for vineyard owners, with 54% stating that insurance rates have increased.

San Diego County officials, including Supervisor Joel Anderson and Assembly Member Marie Waldron, have expressed their support for the local wine industry and its contributions to the local economy and culture. The report also notes that the county’s distilleries generated $25.1 million in sales in 2022, posing potential competition to wine sales. Despite challenges, San Diego wineries remain optimistic about future growth, and the SDCVA is celebrating the industry with San Diego Wine Week, culminating in a wine festival and tasting.
