Restaurant visits decline as consumers make their own lunches

While overall spending at restaurants improved two percent last year, customer traffic actually declined, according to The NPD Group. Both visits to sit-down restaurants and fast-food locations were down. The steepest day-part decline was lunch as more consumers opted to feed themselves rather than visit a restaurant.
