Robots dance and serve coffee in Brooklyn
June 22, 2023
An egg-shaped robot named ADAM dances outside Botbar Coffee in Brooklyn, NY, to draw people into the shop while another ADAM makes drinks for customers inside.
The AI Robot Barista Coffee Shop Experience
The new Botbar Coffee shop that recently opened continues the progressive experimentation with the introduction of an AI robot barista that services customers in an efficient, and hopefully, flawless form.
This soft opening, as reported by Yahoo! Finance, explains is still testing its robot dubbed “Adam” and taking notes on how customers respond. With some critics arguing that robotic labor harms human employment, the Botbar Coffee shop claims it has had a “Help Wanted” sign on its doors for some time, and has yet to find applicants.
The owners also regard Adam as a helper and not a replacement for human employees.
Customers order digitally, which is then transferred to the bot who then makes and serves the coffee afterward. Currently, any generative A.I. technology is still turned off as the company that produces the robot is still fine-tuning the programming.
You wouldn’t be wrong if you pictured yourself as part of a Star Wars movie or an anime episode when trying this bar, but this technology brings us closer to the realization of SciFi tropes than ever.
The notion of a robot barista is nothing new, as there have been similar experiences provided years ago by Cafe X in San Jose, CA, and this only solidifies the evolution of the future of retail.
The futuristic-themed interior design of the premises is in-line with strategies for store design layout, which is integral to the success of any retailer with a physical storefront.
