SKIMS Opens Flagship Store in New York: ‘Proud Moment’ Says Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand SKIMS opened its first flagship brick-and-mortar store in New York City. It is located in Midtown, Manhattan, on Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street.
The company, which sells underwear, loungewear, and shapewear, debuted the location just in time for the Christmas holiday shopping rush. The store is 6,570 square feet and has four floors. It’s the largest shop thus far of the six locations Kardashian has opened. Along with New York City, other SKIMS stores are located in Washington, D.C., Houston, Texas, Aventura, Florida, Austin, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia.
SKIMS began as a direct-to-consumer operation. However, it quickly grew into an assortment of wholesale retail partnerships before opening its first store location this year.
“From the brand’s inception, we envisioned physical stores as an integral part of our business model. The success of our pop-ups and partnerships with trusted retail partners allowed us to refine our approach and learn what truly resonated with our customers,” Jens Grede, SKIMS co-founder and CEO, said in a statement, as reported by Business of Fashion.

In an interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Kim Kardashian called opening a New York flagship store “such a proud moment.” She added, “When we started Skims, we obviously had high hopes, but I never thought of retail and how that would look… We were very focused on direct-to-consumer and everything online. So a Fifth Avenue store exceeds all of the expectations that I had.”
“I know every single product that we have, I have fit every single product that we have coming out. And I know if there is something that slid by me, that I didn’t get the final approval on from the detail on the stitching,” Kardashian explained of the SKIMS brand.
“And while I don’t design everything for me… if I can, I try to at some point, even if I’m just in my closet, show people how I would wear it versus how it was styled on someone else,” she added. “I love always showing our hosiery and shapewear. I think it’s really important, because I wear shapewear with everything, and I think before [SKIMS] — it’s not that it wasn’t accepted — it just wasn’t cool.”
